Who we are
When this policy says “we”, it means the people who make Avocet. Reach us at support@tryavocet.com. We do not sell your data and we do not share it with advertisers.
What we collect
Your notes
Notes are stored in your browser, on your device, using its local database. They are not sent to our servers. Clearing your browser data removes them, and so does deleting them in the app.
A note reaches our servers only when you share it. Sharing publishes a copy of that note, its title, and the email addresses you invite. We keep the copy so the people you invited can open it.
Your account
You can use Avocet without an account, on the free plan of 3 notes at 500 words each. If you create an account, we store your name, your email address, and either a hashed password or the identifier Google gives us when you sign in with Google. We also store a session record so you stay signed in.
Your speech
When you dictate, the recording is sent to a speech-to-text provider, transcribed, and returned as text. We do not keep the audio. The transcript is then sent to a language model that fixes grammar, punctuation, and fillers, along with a short piece of the surrounding note for context and the words in your personal dictionary. What comes back is inserted into your note on your device.
Text you send to Ask and inline AI
When you use Ask, inline AI, or writing checks, the text you select or the note you have open is sent to a language model to produce the answer. We do not store those requests or their answers. The conversation history for Ask is kept in your browser, not on our servers.
Images
Images you add to a note are uploaded to our file storage so they can be shown in the note and in any copy you share. Delete the image from the note to stop referencing it.
Billing
Payments are handled by Polar. We never see or store your card number. We store which plan you are on, when it renews, and whether it is set to cancel, so the app can show the right features.
Settings and cookies
Your theme, dictation language, cleanup tone, and personal dictionary are saved in your browser’s local storage. We set one cookie, for your session, and only when you sign in. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
Server logs
Like most services, our servers log requests: the time, the route, and the IP address they came from. We use logs to keep the service running and to find problems. They are not used to build a profile of you.
How long we keep things
- Account details: until you ask us to delete your account.
- Shared notes and invites: until you stop sharing the note or delete your account.
- Audio recordings: not kept. They exist only for the transcription request.
- Ask and cleanup requests: not stored by us once the answer is returned.
- Server logs: a short period, then rotated out.
Your choices
- Use it without an account. Notes stay on your device and nothing about you is stored on our servers.
- Turn off cleanup. Set cleanup to “Off” in the dictation settings and transcripts are inserted as they were heard, without being sent to a language model.
- Stop sharing a note. Removing invites and turning off link access in the share menu removes the copy from our servers.
- Delete your account. Email support@tryavocet.com from the address on the account. We delete your account, subscription record, shared notes, and invites within 30 days.
- Export your notes. Copy any note as Markdown or download it as a file from the note menu, at any time.
If you are in a region with data protection rights, such as the EU or UK, you can also ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, or ask us to correct it. Use the same address.
Children
Avocet is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has created an account, tell us and we will remove it.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and the date at the top. For a change that matters, we will also tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
